Health and Physical Education (HPE) Policy

At Chatswood Hills State School, our Health and Physical Education (HPE) program promotes participation, teamwork and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. Through sport and physical education, students develop confidence, resilience and positive sportsmanship while learning the importance of effort and fair play. Our approach balances participation, inclusion and healthy competition, ensuring students take part in activities that are appropriate for their age and stage of development.

Junior and Senior Sport

Prep to Year 2 focuses on participation, learning routines and developing confidence in games and physical activity. Students are recognised for effort and participation.

Year 3 to Year 6 students participate in more structured sporting events including carnivals and interschool sport. While competition becomes more formal, participation and teamwork remain central to our program.

Year 3 Transition to Senior Sport

Year 3 is a transition year from junior sport to the senior carnival structure.

Students participate in athletics-style events and earn ribbons and house points. However, Year 3 students are not eligible for Age Champion, as the focus remains on participation and developing confidence in larger sporting events.

Age Groups and Year 4 Cohorts

School carnivals are organised by age groups in 9 years and above or Year levels in the P-3 years to align with representative sport pathways.

Due to Queensland enrolment cut-off dates based on the financial year, Year 4 often contains a split cohort of students aged 9 and 10 years.

This means:

  • Year 4 students who are 10 years old compete in the 10-year age group events
  • Year 4 students who are 9 years old compete in 9-year events

Students who are 9 years old may receive place ribbons, however 9-year-olds are not eligible for Age Champion medals, as Age Champion awards are only presented in the recognised representative age groups.

Age Champion awards are presented for:

  • 10 years
  • 11 years
  • 12 years

Interschool Sport

Students in Years 5 and 6 may participate in interschool sport against other local schools.

Sports vary throughout the year and may include activities such as rugby league, touch football, soccer, volleyball, netball and basketball.

Students participating in interschool sport are expected to:

  • follow the school Code of Conduct
  • attend training sessions
  • complete required consent processes
  • contribute to bus costs where required.

District Sport Pathways

Chatswood Hills State School is part of the Southside Sea Eagles District. Students aged 10 years and older may be eligible to trial for district representative teams. These pathways can lead to regional and state representation.

District trials are designed for students who already demonstrate a strong competitive standard in their sport.

Students are recognised for participation, effort and achievement in school sport.

Interschool Sport

Carnival Points and Age Champion

Carnival points contribute to both house totals and Age Champion calculations in eligible age groups.

Students earn points for placing in events, and participation also contributes to house points.

The 1500m event is used as a qualifying event and does not contribute points.

Attendance and Eligibility

Students must be present and competing on the day of the carnival to receive place ribbons and be considered for Age Champion.

If a student cannot attend but wishes to be considered for district selection, families must notify the school prior to the event.
